Kiambu Modern Market Nears Completion as New Facilities Take Shape

Construction works at the Kamwangi Modern Market in Gatundu North Constituency, Kiambu County, have entered the final stages, according to government updates regarding national market infrastructure initiatives. The multi-storey commercial facility is designed to replace open-air trading grounds with organized, weather-proof commercial space.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, confirmed that building operations are wrapping up. Structural assembly and exterior finishing across the site are complete, with contractors shifting focus toward internal fit-outs and utility installations.

The infrastructure project incorporates designated retail stalls, administrative spaces, and cold storage units designed to preserve perishable agricultural produce. Additionally, the development includes dedicated Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hubs to support digital payment platforms, internet access, and localized logistics management.

The development forms part of the national government’s ongoing Economic Transformation Agenda aimed at improving market infrastructure across rural and peri-urban centers. Under this program, the state is constructing modern agricultural hubs to minimize post-harvest losses and expand organized retail spaces.

The project incorporates structural steel roofing, reinforced concrete framed structures, wide internal walkways, and specialized market stalls fitted with security enclosures. Outdoor parking facilities, loading bays, and utility connections are being finalized ahead of the official commissioning.

Local traders currently operating from makeshift stalls in Kamwangi town will transition into the facility once county authorities finalize the allocation process. The market structure aims to accommodate hundreds of small-scale vendors, agricultural traders, and service providers under one roof.

Civil works around the facility also include drainage management, waste disposal systems, and perimeter security enhancements. These additions ensure compliance with public health standards for commercial food hubs.

Government officials expect the completed market facility to boost economic activity in Gatundu North by connecting local agricultural producers directly with commercial buyers. Full operational handover is expected following final technical inspections by ministry engineers.
