Principal Secretary for Defence Dr Patrick Mariru has inspected progress on the Kipchoge Keino Stadium upgrade in Eldoret. The visit formed part of ongoing oversight of key national infrastructure projects in Uasin Gishu County.
The project is supervised by the Kenya Defence Forces under the Ministry of Defence. Sinohydro Corporation serves as the lead contractor, working in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Sports and the County Government of Uasin Gishu.
Updates from site confirm the upgrade has reached 45 per cent completion. Works remain firmly on track for full delivery in December 2026.

The KSh 3.5 billion project will deliver a modern 15,000-seat stadium upon completion. Scope includes modernisation of the VIP pavilion, new terrace seating, a full canopy, advanced drainage systems, international-grade lighting and athletics track upgrades.
This upgrade addresses a decade of previous delays caused by funding issues and contractor challenges. The Cabinet handed oversight to the Ministry of Defence to accelerate delivery. President William Ruto visited the site in January, leading to a KSh 300 million mobilisation payment and Sinohydroβs active involvement.
The tour included Ms Veska Kangogo, Advisor on Strategy and Execution in the Executive Office of the President. Director General for Sports Timothy Kilimo and Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Chief of Special Projects at Defence Headquarters, also joined.
Multi-agency inspections help maintain coordination and momentum. The KDFβs project management role brings added discipline to the remaining structural and finishing phases.

The 15,000-seat capacity will boost Eldoretβs ability to host major events. Regular assessments allow teams to track milestones and resolve bottlenecks promptly.
Collaboration across national and county levels supports broader sports development goals. The project sustains demand for specialised skills and materials in the local construction sector.
Residents and athletes in the North Rift stand to gain from the completed venue. It promises world-class facilities for elite competition and grassroots sports.
The inspection reinforces government commitment to reviving stalled projects. With funding secured and strict timelines in place, the Kipchoge Keino Stadium is positioned for timely handover by December 2026.
