KURA Delivers Upgraded Road Network in Nyandarua's Engineer Town

Residents and motorists in Engineer Town, Nyandarua County, are now using a revamped road network following the completion of a targeted infrastructure project by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority. The agency, which is responsible for the management and development of public roads in cities and municipalities, has delivered several kilometers of newly surfaced roads within the busy trading hub.

The upgrades feature high-quality asphalt concrete surfacing, replacing older, weathered sections that had previously hindered the flow of traffic during peak hours. In addition to the main carriageways, the project included the installation of paved pedestrian walkways using interlocking concrete blocks. These sidewalks are separated from the vehicle lanes by concrete curbs, a design choice aimed at improving safety for the high volume of foot traffic typical in Nyandarua’s commercial centers.

Engineers on the project focused on ensuring the new roads could withstand the unique climatic conditions of the region. Nyandarua is known for its high rainfall and productive agricultural output, which necessitates robust drainage systems to prevent water-logging and premature wear of the road surface. The completed works show integrated side drains and culverts designed to channel runoff away from the primary infrastructure.

The marking of the roads has also been completed, featuring standard yellow centerlines to guide motorists through the town’s winding terrain. This development is part of a broader mandate by the authority to enhance connectivity within secondary urban centers, which serve as critical nodes for the transport of farm produce and retail goods.

Engineer Town serves as a strategic gateway within the county, and the improved road quality is expected to reduce vehicle maintenance costs for local operators. By providing a smooth, reliable surface, the project addresses long-standing complaints regarding dust during the dry season and mud during the rains.

The successful handover of these roads comes at a time when the national government is prioritizing the completion of existing urban projects to stimulate local economies. Observations of the site show that the new infrastructure has already begun to change the face of the town, with cleaner storefront access and more organized parking along the paved sections.

While the primary construction phase is concluded, the authority is expected to maintain oversight of the network to ensure that the drainage remains clear and the road markings remain visible.
