KETRACO has commissioned the Masaba Substation in Migori County, replacing an overstretched old line and delivering more reliable power from hydro and geothermal sources through modern infrastructure.

The Masaba Substation in Migori County now supplies stable power after its commissioning by KETRACO. The 132kV bulk supply facility has taken over from the previous 33/11kV line that ran over 26 kilometres from Awendo. That older setup suffered high losses, voltage drops and frequent instability.

The new substation acts as a localised supply node. It shortens distribution lines for Kenya Power and draws from cleaner sources including hydroelectric power at Sondu Miriu and geothermal energy at Olkaria. This shift improves overall system efficiency in South Nyanza.

Construction of the facility included heavy-duty steel transmission towers along a 28-kilometre corridor. These towers help reduce fault interruptions compared with older wooden or lighter structures. The project also features a control and relay room, battery room and auxiliary services unit to support reliable operations.

Advanced SCADA systems form part of the installation. They allow real-time grid monitoring and quicker response to issues. Such technology marks a clear upgrade from manual or less integrated setups common in older rural networks.

Beyond the core electrical works, the contractor carried out community support under corporate social responsibility. This included measures to improve local water access, linking infrastructure delivery with wider development benefits in the area.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration oversees protection of the site. Critical transmission infrastructure like this substation requires ongoing security to safeguard national assets and maintain uninterrupted supply.

For Kenya’s construction and power sector the Masaba project illustrates typical demands of substation and transmission line builds. These involve precise civil engineering for foundations, structural steel work for towers, and integration of control buildings and electrical systems. Projects in similar rural or semi-urban settings often face challenges around terrain, material transport and coordination with existing networks.

Reliable power infrastructure supports broader economic activity. Stable supply reduces downtime for small industries, agro-processing and households in the region. It also aligns with national goals for expanded access and lower losses in distribution.

The commissioning took place in June 2025. Recent updates highlight its role in addressing long-standing supply gaps in Migori County. Similar substation and line projects continue across the country as KETRACO and partners expand the grid.

Construction timelines for such facilities typically span several years from planning through energisation. Success depends on steady funding, quality materials and skilled teams capable of handling high-voltage equipment.

Local content in these builds often includes steel fabrication, civil works and installation labour drawn from nearby areas. This creates short-term employment while leaving lasting assets.

The Masaba Substation adds to efforts to modernise Kenya’s transmission backbone. As more renewable sources come online, robust substations become essential nodes for balancing and distributing power efficiently.

Stakeholders in the built environment will continue to watch grid expansion projects for opportunities in civil, structural and electrical contracting. Delivery of facilities like Masaba supports both immediate service improvements and longer-term industrial growth.
