The modern multi-purpose Kangeta ESP Market in Meru nears handover, featuring specialized storage and space for hundreds of traders to revitalize regional agricultural trade and local employment.

Construction of the Kangeta Economic Stimulus Program (ESP) Market in Meru County has entered its final stages, with the facility now 90 percent complete. Government officials confirmed the progress this week, noting that the site is currently undergoing final preparations before being handed over for public use.

The project, which was launched in 2024, is designed as a modern hub to support the agricultural productivity of the surrounding region. Laborers on-site are currently focused on finishing touches, including the cleaning of terrazzo flooring and the completion of construction around the septic system.

Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo indicated that the facility is nearing full operational readiness. The design emphasizes a multi-purpose approach, integrating several specialized zones within a single complex to serve diverse community needs.

The structure includes a fully equipped kitchen, an ICT hub, and a social hall intended for community gatherings. For administrative and logistical support, the market features dedicated office spaces, an ablution block, and a specific room for mothers.

Capacity for traders is a central feature of the new development. The ground floor is designed to accommodate 250 traders, while an additional 150 spaces are located on the upper floor. This total capacity of 400 trading slots aims to provide a more organized environment for local commerce.

A critical component for the local agricultural sector is the inclusion of cold storage units. These facilities are intended to help farmers preserve perishable goods, which often go to waste due to the lack of temperature-controlled environments. By reducing post-harvest losses, the market seeks to stabilize income for smallholder farmers.

The project has also served as a source of immediate employment for the local community. Twenty workers from the surrounding area have been engaged on-site throughout the construction process. This involvement is part of a broader strategy to foster community ownership of the infrastructure.

Strategically placed in an area known for its agricultural wealth, the market is expected to serve as a vital link in the regional food value chain. It provides a dignified space for both the sale and processing of agricultural goods.

The Kangeta facility is part of a wider national initiative under the administration of President Ruto to modernize markets across the country. These ESP markets are designed to replace informal trading areas with permanent, sheltered structures that offer better sanitation and security.

As the contractor completes the final drainage and utility connections, local traders are preparing for the transition into the new space. The handover is expected to take place shortly after the final inspections are cleared by the relevant department.
