Mwache Dam Set for Reservoir Impoundment in Late 2026

Construction teams on the Mwache Multi-Purpose Dam project are moving into the final stages of main wall development, with reservoir impoundment officially slated for October 1, 2026.

Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Korir confirmed the timeline following a site review in Kwale County.

Progress across the flagship site has accelerated, reaching an overall completion mark of 80 percent. The main dam structure, an 84-meter-tall Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) gravity wall, now stands at 86 percent completion.

Meanwhile, the lower check dam, designed to intercept sediment before water enters the primary reservoir, has reached 87 percent.

Site operations have been bolstered by the substantial completion of critical auxiliary installations, including the base camp and administrative center, both standing at 99 percent.

Surrounding community infrastructure is also nearing handover, with relocated schools at 98 percent, healthcare facilities at 85 percent, and the local police post reaching 70 percent.

Once operational, the facility will hold 136 million cubic meters of water, delivering 186,000 cubic meters daily to Kwale and Mombasa counties to address persistent regional deficits.

Works are also proceeding on community access roads to streamline transport across the site footprint before impoundment begins.
