Regional carrier Renegade Air has announced an increase in flight frequencies to Homa Bay County, signaling a rise in demand for air travel to the upgraded Kabunde Airstrip facility.

Renegade Air has confirmed an expansion of its flight schedule to Kabunde Airstrip in Homa Bay County, responding to a steady increase in passenger traffic since the airline first launched the route. The move reflects growing confidence in the regional transport infrastructure, which underwent significant refurbishment to accommodate commercial operations.

The decision to add more frequencies follows an assessment of the current travel patterns, where demand for rapid transit between Nairobi and Western Kenya has outpaced existing seat capacity. By increasing the number of weekly rotations, the airline aims to provide more flexible options for business travelers and government officials who frequent the county headquarters.

Kabunde Airstrip has seen a series of technical improvements over recent years, including the extension and modernization of the runway and the installation of a proper terminal building. These upgrades were designed to allow larger aircraft to land safely, moving the facility away from its previous status as a limited-use airfield.

The airline currently operates the route using the De Havilland Dash 8-300, a turboprop aircraft well-suited for regional airstrips with shorter runways. The reliability of this aircraft type has been a factor in maintaining a consistent schedule, even during the fluctuating weather patterns characteristic of the Lake Victoria basin.

Local leadership in Homa Bay has previously advocated for improved air links to stimulate the regional economy. The arrival of additional flights is expected to reduce the reliance on long-distance road travel, which often takes over seven hours from the capital. This reduction in travel time is a critical factor for the logistics and service sectors in the region.

From a construction and maintenance perspective, the increased frequency will put the airstrip's pavement and drainage systems to a more rigorous test. Regular inspections by the Kenya Airports Authority will be necessary to ensure that the runway surface maintains its integrity under the higher volume of take-offs and landings.

The expansion also highlights the role of smaller regional hubs in Kenya’s broader aviation master plan. While major international airports handle the bulk of cargo and foreign arrivals, airstrips like Kabunde are essential for the "last-mile" connectivity that links remote counties to the national economic grid.

Renegade Air’s strategy involves tapping into markets that were previously underserved by the dominant national carriers. By establishing a firm footprint in Homa Bay, the airline is positioning itself as a primary stakeholder in the county’s transport network, which includes ongoing road projects and the potential for lakefront redevelopment.

As the new schedule takes effect, the focus will shift to whether the existing terminal facilities can handle the increased passenger flow. There are ongoing discussions regarding further upgrades to the apron and parking areas, which would be required if other operators decide to follow Renegade’s lead into the Homa Bay market.

For now, the additional flights represent a pragmatic utilization of the taxpayer-funded upgrades at Kabunde. The success of this route serves as a case study for other counties looking to revive their local airstrips to attract private sector investment and improve regional accessibility.
