The government has officially broken ground on the KSh 850 million Thika Stadium reconstruction, a ten-month project overseen by the military to meet international sporting standards for AFCON 2027.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya have officially presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of Thika Stadium in Kiambu County. The project, which carries a total investment of KSh 850 million, aims to transform the existing municipal ground into a modern 10,000-seater sports complex within a strict ten-month delivery window.

This infrastructure development is a central component of Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania. Due to its proximity to Nairobi, the Thika facility is being positioned as a strategic training ground and potential match venue to alleviate pressure on primary stadiums in the capital.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have been tasked with the technical supervision and execution of the works. This move follows a growing trend of utilizing the military’s engineering units for high-priority public infrastructure to ensure adherence to timelines and budget constraints. During the ceremony, CS Tuya confirmed that the KDF would bring the same precision to Thika as seen in previous sports projects like the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Technical specifications for the new facility include a standard football pitch and a modern eight-lane athletics track. The structural plans also detail the installation of new spectator terraces, a canopy roof, and a dedicated VVIP pavilion designed to host high-profile dignitaries. Existing amenities on the site, specifically the swimming pool and basketball courts, are slated for preservation and integration into the new complex design.

Public concerns regarding the displacement of local traders who operate near the stadium perimeter were addressed during the site visit. CS Mvurya provided assurances that the construction activities would not result in the permanent removal of small businesses, but rather seek to incorporate the local economy into the broader sports hub ecosystem. The government expects the project to generate immediate employment opportunities for Thika residents during the various phases of civil works.

The current Thika Municipal Stadium has long been criticized for its dilapidated state and lack of basic player amenities. Previous attempts at renovation had stalled, leaving the facility largely unsuitable for top-flight football matches. The new Sh850 million injection is intended to rectify these structural deficiencies and elevate the stadium to a world-class status that can sustain national and regional competitions.

With the ten-month clock now running, the joint technical team from the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Sports will monitor the site's progress. The completion of the facility by early 2027 is considered essential for the final inspection rounds by continental football governing bodies ahead of the AFCON tournament.
