The Esirulo ESP Market in Vihiga County, a key Economic Stimulus Programme project, is progressing well with ongoing duct walling and beam works. Commenced in March 2025, the facility will accommodate 224 traders, offering modern amenities like an ICT hub and cold room, while also employing 20 local youth and women in the construction phase.

The national agenda for economic transformation, encapsulated by the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), places significant emphasis on empowering the grassroots economy. At the core of this strategy are the small and medium-sized traders whose ability to thrive is directly tied to the quality of their trading environment.

To this end, the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) continues its vital investment in establishing modern, organized trading spaces across the nation, ensuring livelihoods can grow in dignity and safety. This structural upgrade is fundamental to formalizing local enterprise and providing a strong foundation for future economic stability.

A prime example of this commitment is taking shape in Vihiga County with the construction of the Esirulo ESP Market. This transformative project, which broke ground in March 2025, is a direct response to the need for structured, fully equipped facilities where local commerce can flourish.

Once complete, the market will offer a significantly cleaner, safer, and more promising business space, capable of accommodating 224 traders. This substantial capacity will not only improve the daily lives of the entrepreneurs but also standardize and enhance the overall trading experience for the entire community, moving away from unstructured, open-air environments.

The facility’s design goes significantly beyond basic stalls, integrating a comprehensive suite of essential amenities designed to promote inclusivity and operational efficiency. Traders and patrons will benefit from a dedicated ICT hub, a crucial addition in the modern economy, alongside a cold room for the proper storage of perishable goods.

A specialized lactating room is also being incorporated, underscoring a commitment to supporting mothers in business. Further ensuring the market’s status as a community center, the plans include administrative offices, a children’s playground, a social hall, a fully equipped kitchen, and a state-of-the-art ablution block.

Critically, this activity is directly transforming lives in Vihiga. The site currently employs a dedicated team of 20 workers, with a deliberate focus on engaging local youth and women. This workforce composition affirms the government's dual commitment to delivering critical, modern infrastructure while simultaneously ensuring community empowerment through tangible job opportunities, thereby firmly delivering the plan promised under the national economic agenda.
