Coast's Water Crisis Solution Nears as Mwache Dam Hits 58% Completion Mark

The vital Mwache Multi-purpose Dam in Kinango Sub-County, Kwale County, has reached an impressive 58% completion, signaling a decisive step toward resolving long-standing water deficits across Kenya's coastal region. This flagship infrastructure project, which features an 84-meter-high Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) gravity dam, is progressing at a disciplined and steady pace, embodying the Government's commitment to transformative development.

Once operational, the colossal reservoir, with a capacity of 136 million cubic meters, will dramatically enhance water security. It is engineered to supply 186 million liters of water per day for both domestic and industrial use to households and businesses in Kwale and Mombasa Counties. This reliable supply is expected to be a significant catalyst for enhanced economic activity and long-term resilience at the coastal gateway, fundamentally changing the water landscape for millions of residents.

Beyond its primary function, the Mwache Dam project is designed for holistic, high-impact development. The scope includes constructing a lower check dam, upgrading access and relocation roads, and implementing modern water distribution systems. Furthermore, the construction of three new Mwache schools is integrated into the plan, demonstrating a focus on social infrastructure alongside water provision.
