Excavation Continues at Kapkatet Stadium Under Defence Watch

Principal Secretary for Defence Dr Patrick Mariru on Wednesday inspected ongoing works at Kapkatet Stadium in Kericho County. The facility is planned as a 10,000-seater venue.

Defence is supervising the construction works. Excavation work is ongoing. The focus is on delivering the project by the end of this year as directed by President William Samoei Ruto.

The works at the stadium had stalled for a long time. Officials are reclaiming and transforming the facility into a modern sports and recreational centre.

It is intended to provide opportunities for sports, talent development and recreation for the people of Kericho County.

Brigadier Titus Sokobe of Defence was present during the visit. Acting Deputy County Commissioner Monica Muli and members of the County Security Team also attended.

Mariru described the stop as his second project visit of the day. The Kapkatet site forms part of the national projects receiving Ministry of Defence supervision.

Excavation activity was under way across the open ground. The Principal Secretary reviewed progress toward the year-end completion target.

The extended period of inactivity preceded the current phase of work. Reclamation of the site is now the stated priority under the present supervision arrangement.

County security and administrative officers joined the Defence team for the inspection. The group assessed the scale of excavation already completed.

Mariru restated the directive to deliver the project by the end of the year. The 10,000-seater capacity remains the design intention for the finished facility.

Transformation into a modern sports and recreational centre is the broader objective. Talent development and local recreation form part of the intended outcomes once complete.

No revised timelines were announced during the visit. The end-of-year target continues to guide the programme of works.

The presence of Brigadier Sokobe underscored the operational role of Defence Headquarters in the supervision. Local officials provided county-level coordination.

Kapkatet Stadium joins other Rift Valley sites under the same oversight structure. Progress at this location centres on the active excavation phase.

Mariru’s inspection confirmed that ground works are moving forward after the extended period of inactivity. The Ministry maintains the focus on meeting the stated delivery date.

Further construction stages will follow the current excavation. Officials on site indicated the reclamation process is under way in line with the presidential directive.
