Kenneth Matiba Hospital Expansion Advances Under KDF Supervision

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr Raymond Omollo on Thursday highlighted the ongoing expansion of Kenneth Matiba Hospital. The project advances Universal Health Coverage as a key pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Implemented by the National Government, the works are under the direct supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces. The upgrade will expand the hospital from a 20-bed facility to a modern 100-bed Level 4 referral hospital.

The completed facility will include a trauma centre, doctors’ plaza, specialised clinics and expanded inpatient wards. It will operate round the clock, providing comprehensive specialised healthcare.

The expansion is expected to ease pressure on neighbouring referral facilities. The project also honours the enduring legacy of Kenneth Matiba, whose sacrifices for Kenya’s democracy and public leadership continue to inspire the nation.

Omollo said the works reaffirm the broader commitment of the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration to support national development. Safe, secure communities and strong public health systems are mutually reinforcing foundations of a productive nation.

The increase in bed capacity and addition of specialised services form the core of the upgrade. Round-the-clock operations will extend access for patients in the surrounding area.

KDF supervision places the project within the Ministry’s portfolio of national developments. The Principal Secretary linked the works to the wider UHC agenda.

No revised completion dates were provided in the update. The focus remained on the expanded capacity and the range of new facilities planned.

The doctors’ plaza and specialised clinics are expected to support a broader range of medical services. Expanded inpatient wards will increase the hospital’s ability to handle admissions.
