From May 2024 to Completion: Matharu ESP Market Takes Shape

The Matharu ESP Market in Uasin Gishu County has been completed and is awaiting official handover, providing a new trading facility for small-scale businesses in Matharu, Kesses Sub-county. The project is part of the government’s wider programme to improve trading spaces across the country

Construction of the market began in May 2024 as part of the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP). The facility was developed to provide traders with a more organized place to conduct business while improving the general conditions under which small enterprises operate.

The market has been designed to accommodate more than 300 traders. It includes modern stalls where traders can display and sell their goods, giving businesses operating in the area a dedicated space instead of relying on less structured trading arrangements.

A water reticulation system has also been installed at the market to support the needs of traders and customers. Access to a reliable water supply is important for maintaining cleanliness within the facility, particularly in areas where food and other consumer products are sold.

The facility also has a secure perimeter fence, providing a defined boundary around the trading area. The fencing is expected to help improve security and control movement in and out of the market as traders begin using the new premises.

In addition to the permanent stalls, the market includes an open-air section that can accommodate different forms of vending. This space provides flexibility for traders whose businesses may require more room or whose goods are better suited to open-air selling.

Matharu is a high-density peri-urban area within Kesses Sub-county, where trading activities support many households. The new market provides a centralized location for these activities and is expected to give local traders a more structured environment for their businesses.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has also been involved in coordinating local frameworks around the market. These arrangements are intended to support orderly operations and improve safety for both traders and customers.

With construction now complete, attention has shifted to the official handover and the process of putting the facility into use. Once operational, traders will be able to occupy the designated spaces and conduct their businesses within the newly constructed market.

The Matharu project is part of broader efforts to improve public trading facilities and provide suitable spaces for small businesses. Its completion adds another modern market facility to Uasin Gishu County while giving traders in the area access to infrastructure designed for everyday commercial activities.
