The Ministry of Education has finalized construction of Shanzu Senior School in Mombasa, a key facility designed to support the pioneer cohort of the Competency Based Education curriculum.

The government has completed the construction of Shanzu Senior School, a newly established public institution designed to accommodate the first cohort of learners under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework. The school, which was officially opened in December 2025, represents a targeted investment in education infrastructure aimed at expanding capacity in historically underserved regions. While the facility has reached physical completion, it is currently in a preparatory phase ahead of the full commencement of academic operations.

The infrastructure at Shanzu consists of eight classrooms and two specialized science laboratories, which are requisite for the Senior School level of the CBE curriculum. The layout also includes a central administration block and a staff room, alongside separate ablution facilities for male and female students. These physical assets are intended to meet national standards for learner-centered environments as the country shifts toward more specialized educational pathways.

The completion of the Shanzu project coincides with the national transition of Grade 10 learners into Senior School. This shift requires existing and new institutions to provide specific facilities that support the diverse subject clusters introduced by the Ministry of Education. By providing dedicated laboratory space and modern classroom settings, the Shanzu facility is positioned to handle the technical and academic demands of the new curriculum.

The Ministry of Education is currently coordinating with the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration to manage the administrative side of the school’s opening. This collaboration involves learner mapping and community engagement to ensure that the local population is integrated into the school’s enrollment plan. This effort is part of a broader government policy to achieve a 100 percent transition rate for students moving from Junior School to the Senior School level.

Government officials have emphasized that the delivery of such infrastructure is a strategic move to ensure social equity through education. By placing high-standard facilities in formerly marginalized areas, the state aims to provide students in these regions with the same resources available in urban centers. This strategy focuses on translating physical construction into measurable enrollment and learning outcomes.

As the 2026 academic calendar progresses, the focus for Shanzu Senior School shifts from construction to operational readiness. The inter-ministerial team is tasked with ensuring that the administrative support is sufficient to manage the first intake of learners. The facility stands as a tangible addition to the public education inventory, providing a model for the types of specialized Senior Schools needed to sustain the ongoing reforms in the national education sector.
