Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is at the forefront of preparing Kenyan youth for the global job market, aligning directly with President William Ruto's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions are equipping students with hands-on skills that provide a clear pathway into both local and global job markets. The Kieni Technical and Vocational College is an excellent example of this national transformation. It is a fully accredited institution specializing in Competency Based Education and Training. The foundation stone for the college was laid in 2016 by H.E. President William Samoei Ruto, who was then serving as Deputy President. The college welcomed its first cohort of students in 2019 and has been expanding its reach ever since.

The campus now boasts modern infrastructure and seven dynamic departments. These include Agriculture, Automotive Engineering, and Business Studies, among others. Mechanical Engineering, ICT, Building and Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Institutional Management round out their diverse offerings. This wide range ensures that students can specialize in fields that have high demand in the current market.

Training at Kieni TVC is intentionally focused on practical application. Students first concentrate on mastering essential core skills through rigorous training. They then quickly transition into working on authentic, real world projects. This system is designed to accelerate their competence and readiness for the workforce. In fact, this rapid skill acquisition makes them highly attractive to potential employers.

The college has also invested significantly in preparing students for the burgeoning digital economy. The impressive Jitume Digital Lab is equipped with one hundred computers, and is specifically designed to train students for online work, helping them secure remote jobs in Kenya’s digital sector. They are also fostering innovation that pushes the boundaries of technical creativity. The college recently developed a human follower robot, which vividly showcases the advanced technical capability now emerging from TVET institutions.

Looking ahead, the government recognizes the need to further support these committed learners. Many Kieni students currently endure long commutes from distant towns like Karatina, Naromoru, and Nanyuki. To address this challenge, there are active plans to construct Affordable Student Hostels near the campus. These new facilities will significantly make campus life more accessible and vibrant for everyone. The success of TVET institutions like Kieni TVC is a powerful testament to the transformative potential of practical, hands on education.
