KeNHA has initiated Performance-Based Contract (PBC) maintenance on the Kisian-Ugunja (A12) road, a key trade route. This modern approach ensures long-term road quality, durability, and safety, enhancing regional economic connectivity and providing a sustainable solution for the crucial corridor.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has reinforced its commitment to maintaining the country’s core transport network by deploying a Performance-Based Contract (PBC) model for the essential upkeep of the Kisian-Ugunja (A12) road.

This strategic corridor, which forms a vital link between Kisumu and the Busia border, has been prioritized for comprehensive maintenance works aimed at ensuring long-term durability and safety enhancements.

Unlike traditional contracts that focus solely on executing a specific set of works, the PBC model holds the contractor accountable for maintaining predefined standards of road condition, serviceability, and safety over a multi-year period.

The PBC model incentivizes a higher standard of workmanship and the selection of more resilient materials, significantly mitigating the common issues of rapid deterioration and frequent repairs.

The Kisian-Ugunja section is critical for trade flow, linking the agricultural heartlands of Western and Nyanza regions to major commercial hubs and international markets.

KeNHA's maintenance plan includes specific safety enhancements, such as improved signage, drainage systems, and road marking, which are integral to the PBC scope of work and vital for minimizing traffic risks.

As KeNHA continues to oversee the ongoing works, the agency reminds motorists to exercise caution and adhere to temporary traffic management instructions in sections where maintenance is active.

The successful execution of this PBC project is poised to serve as a benchmark for similar infrastructure initiatives across the national road network.
