The Kenya Urban Roads Authority is entering the final phases of construction for the flyover at the Ngong Road and Naivasha Road intersection, a critical piece of infrastructure designed to resolve the bottleneck near the Junction Mall. According to recent government briefings, the project has reached 85 percent completion as of February 2026.
President William Ruto, who inspected the progress on Tuesday, indicated that the current pace of work puts the project on track for a full opening by June 2026. This timeline represents a substantial acceleration for the project, which was initially expected to be delivered in 2027. The Sh3.8 billion project is being implemented by Centunion, a Spanish construction firm, and is funded through a concessional loan from the Spanish Corporate International Fund.
The structural works for the 255-meter viaduct are largely finished, with recent activity focusing on the installation of the steel superstructure and the preparation for concrete deck casting. The total length of the project, including the approach ramps, extends to 820 meters. Once operational, the four-lane elevated road will allow traffic on Ngong Road to bypass the congested Naivasha Road junction, providing a direct link between the city center and the western suburbs.
Aside from the primary viaduct, the scope of work includes the installation of modern street lighting and improved drainage systems to mitigate the perennial flooding issues at the junction. The project also incorporates non-motorized transport facilities, specifically dedicated lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, to ensure safety along the bus corridor.
Landscaping and urbanisation works are expected to follow the completion of the main road surface. These final touches are intended to enhance the aesthetic value of the area while improving the overall urban environment in Nairobi. The project is a key component of the government's broader strategy to modernize urban transport and reduce the economic cost of traffic congestion, which is estimated to cost the capital billions of shillings annually in lost productivity and fuel.
The early delivery of the flyover is also expected to facilitate logistics for upcoming international events, including the AFCON 2027 tournament. The flyoverβs proximity to the Talanta Hela Stadium, currently under construction, makes it a vital transport link for handling the high traffic volumes anticipated during matches.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority has maintained that the project remains within the revised budget and safety standards. Motorists and local businesses in the Dagoretti Corner area have experienced various traffic diversions during the construction phase, but the nearing completion date suggests that these disruptions will soon conclude. With the steel framework in place, the contractor is now shifting focus toward the final road surfacing and the completion of the service lanes that will serve the Junction Mall and surrounding commercial zones.
