Kenyan entrepreneur Kevin Onyona expanded his multi-million dollar fine-dining footprint with the establishment of a Swahili Village restaurant branch in Newark, New Jersey. The restaurant chain, known for bringing East African hospitality and cuisine to the United States, represents a growing network of African culinary enterprises abroad.
The Newark outlet joins a portfolio of established locations across major American business hubs, including College Park, Beltsville, and Northwest Washington, District of Columbia (DC). Founded by Onyona in 2016, the Swahili Village brand has grown into an African cuisine network with an estimated business empire value of 3.5 million US dollars.
The expansion highlights the operational realities of running ethnic hospitality venues in foreign markets, where service teams often feature diverse international staff. Guests visiting the New Jersey establishment are frequently served by Brazilian or Mexican waiters, reflecting the multicultural labor dynamics supporting the business.
The restaurant brand features traditional Kenyan staples such as goat stew, nyama choma, kuku choma, bhajia, and samaki wa nazi, alongside regional selections like Jollof rice. The Newark facility provides standard fine dining space, private meeting accommodations, and dedicated event catering capabilities.
The enterprise previously attracted high-profile state visits, including a dinner hosted for President William Ruto during an official tour of the United States. The brand continues to position itself as a key destination for African fine dining and diplomatic gatherings in the East Coast region.
