The government has confirmed that the next phase of modernization at the Nyayo National Stadium will involve the installation of a comprehensive canopy. President William Ruto announced the project during the Jamhuri Day celebrations, stating that actual construction is scheduled to begin in January 2026. This development follows the completion of recent upgrades, including the installation of a new tartan track and improvements to the lighting systems.
The planned canopy is designed to cover the seating areas, providing spectators with protection from weather conditions such as sun and rain. During the announcement, the President noted that this infrastructure project is intended to improve the comfort and safety of fans during major public and sporting events. The upgrade aligns the stadium with modern global facility designs and is part of a broader investment in sports infrastructure across the country.
The installation of the roofing structure is a key component of Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania. By adding the canopy, the government aims to elevate the 18,000-seater multipurpose stadium to international status, ensuring it meets the requirements for continental football tournaments.
Recent works at the site have already seen the facility handed over from the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of Sports after preliminary renovations. These included a refreshed pitch, a reinforced perimeter wall, and a new media center in the VIP section. The commencement of the canopy project in January marks the final major structural addition to the iconic Nairobi venue before the upcoming international competitions.
