The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) Special General Meeting requisitioned by members will go ahead on 21 May 2026 at United Kenya Club, Nairobi, following approval from the Registrar of Societies amid ongoing internal governance and election-related discussions.

Members of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) have secured approval to hold their requisitioned Special General Meeting tomorrow, 21 May 2026. The Registrar of Societies has authorised the gathering and requested a report on the deliberations afterwards.

The development follows formal communication by the members to the Registrar after the IEK President declined to convene the meeting. The correspondence was copied to the IEK secretariat.

Organisers say all necessary constitutional requirements have been met. A registration link has been shared for members, and turnout registration is reported to be progressing well. The meeting is scheduled to start at 4 PM at United Kenya Club in Nairobi and is open to all categories of engineers, including graduates.

The SGM comes against the backdrop of a leadership transition dispute within the institution. Court orders had earlier suspended elections that were due in March 2026 following a petition challenging aspects of the electoral process, particularly graduate members’ voting rights. This created a situation where the previous council’s term expired without a new one in place.

Proponents of the SGM see it as a legitimate platform to discuss institutional management, governance and leadership matters. The IEK Council had, however, raised procedural points, including the suitability of addressing certain issues while related court matters remain active.

Organisers, including engineer Howard M’mayi, have emphasised the importance of maintaining a professional and constructive tone during the meeting. They expressed hope for fruitful engagement that will help chart a way forward for the institution.

The developments reflect broader conversations within Kenya’s engineering fraternity about institutional governance, member participation and adherence to the IEK constitution. Tomorrow’s proceedings are expected to generate significant interest across the sector.
