Jason Arday: Black Cambridge Professor Accused of Plagiarism Found Dead at 41

Jason Arday, the 41-year-old former Cambridge professor who became the youngest Black professor in the university’s history, has been found dead in south London.

Arday was found unresponsive at an address on Friday, August 14, according to reports. Police said the death was unexpected but was not being treated as suspicious.

A report is expected to be prepared for the coroner, with the circumstances surrounding his death yet to be established.

Arday resigned from the University of Cambridge on August 5, where he had served as Professor of Sociology of Education and as a fellow of Jesus College.

His resignation came amid allegations of plagiarism and scrutiny of his academic work. Questions had been raised over material contained in his doctoral thesis and other publications.

Arday denied allegations of plagiarism. The controversy also prompted questions about aspects of his academic and professional background.

He had joined Cambridge in 2023 and attracted attention after becoming the youngest Black professor in the university’s history.

His academic career had focused on issues including race, education and social inequality, and his appointment was widely noted within British academia.

Cambridge had been preparing to investigate the concerns surrounding his appointment and academic work. His resignation came before that process had been completed.
