KeNHA, led by Director of Maintenance Eng. Ezekiel Fukwo, held a forum with advertising firms to clarify the legal application process for roadside advertising permits.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has initiated a concerted effort to bring clarity and order to the process of applying for roadside advertising permits across the national road network. The move, spearheaded by the Director of Maintenance Eng. Ezekiel Fukwo is aimed at ensuring compliance with regulations and enhancing public safety along major highways.

The Authority recently convened a crucial Stakeholder Engagement and Sensitisation Forum that brought together representatives from leading branding and advertising companies in the country. The central objective of the meeting was to thoroughly discuss the legal application process for the erection and placement of all roadside advertising structures.
Discussions at the forum focused on the specific requirements that must be met by companies that seek road reserve for commercial advertising. These requirements, drawn from existing legal frameworks such as the Kenya Roads Regulations, 2023, govern aspects like the structural integrity of billboards, proof of land ownership or leasehold rights, the submission of detailed engineering designs and geo-referenced layout plans.

Furthermore, the Authority underscored the necessity of obtaining all prerequisite documents, including environmental and social impact assessment statements and tax compliance certificates, to ensure a smooth and legal application trajectory.

The sensitisation exercise serves as a proactive measure to ensure advertising firms are fully aware of their obligations before commencing any development within the road corridor. By clearly defining the procedural and technical requirements, the Authority aims to create a more efficient system that benefits both the regulator and the compliant industry players.
