With mock elections complete, the Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya prepares for its 2026 council poll on 28 May. Multiple top positions drew only one nominee each, raising questions about member engagement as the profession navigates Kenya's busy construction sector.

The Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya (IQSK) is days away from electing its council for the 2026-2028 term. Voting is set for Thursday 28 May, following today’s mock run on the dedicated online portal. QS Mutinda Mutuku has led the body as president since 2024.

Nominations closed earlier this month. The final list shows 14 candidates across seven positions. In several cases, only one person stepped forward.

For president, QS Janet Cheruto Chirchir is the sole nominee. Member number 1492, she faces no challenger for the top seat.

The same pattern holds for honorary treasurer, where QS Jasan Njoroge stands alone, and honorary registrar, where QS Jordan Rabach Opiyo is unopposed.

Vice president attracted two candidates. QS Daniel Muthinga and QS David Gidudi Choka will compete for the single vacancy. Honorary secretary also has two hopefuls: QS Cynthia Moira Mulaku and QS Delores Wekoye Mbati.

The assistant honorary secretary post drew three nominees. QS Barrack Omondi Ongondo, QS Erick Ondiek Ogola and QS Rosemary Mukami Macharia will battle it out. Four candidates are contesting the four ordinary council member seats: QS Francis Odongo, QS Gilbert Mumba Ndegwa, QS Jacquelyne Jerotich Legishion and QS Reuben Nyakundi Bikeri.

The limited competition in key roles points to possible reluctance among eligible members to take on leadership. Only Licentiate, Professional and Fellow members in good standing with paid-up 2026 subscriptions can vote or stand. The Independent Elections Commission has urged everyone to verify their status on the portal before the final register closed today.

Mock elections on 21 May gave members a chance to test the system. The portal at elections.iqskenya.org allowed practice logins and status checks. Organisers stressed the need for smooth operations on polling day, when voting runs from 8am to 5pm.

IQSK represents professionals who manage project costs, procurement and contract administration across public and private developments. With major infrastructure projects under way and urban building continuing at pace, the council plays a role in professional standards, training and advocacy.

Turnout and the make-up of the new council will indicate the current health of the institution. Low interest in some positions could signal either satisfaction with the status quo or barriers to wider participation. The commission has kept the process transparent, publishing timelines and documents including By-Law 17 on election rules.

Results will be declared after polls close. Any petitions must be filed within 14 days. Members have been reminded to renew subscriptions by 20 May to remain eligible. Queries go to elections@iqskenya.org.

The election comes at a time when quantity surveyors face demands for better cost control amid fluctuating material prices and tighter project timelines. How the incoming council addresses these issues will matter to practitioners and clients alike.
