Nairobi has entered a critical phase in its campaign to secure the hosting rights for the 2029 or 2031 World Athletics Championships. A high-level delegation from the World Athletics Bid Evaluation Panel is in the country for a three-day inspection tour to evaluate whether local sporting infrastructure meets international requirements.
Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi hosted the international delegation, which is led by Antti Pihlakoski, the chair of the evaluation panel. The closed-door strategic discussions focused on operational capacity, financial guarantees, and the ongoing modernization of local sports facilities.
Government officials present during the introductory talks included Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) Chairman Aphaxard Muthuri Kiugu, Sports Secretary Administration Evans Achoki, and senior representatives from Athletics Kenya (AK). The meetings aimed to demonstrate the state's capacity to deliver a global competition.
This inspection marks the second time Kenya has formally pursued the biennial global track and field showpiece. The capital city previously lost its bid for the 2025 edition to Tokyo, Japan, after international evaluators raised concerns regarding stadium readiness and development timelines.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe noted during the prior bidding cycle that while the country possessed a rich athletic heritage, the infrastructure required substantial modernization. Beijing, China, has already been selected to host the 2027 edition, leaving the 2029 and 2031 slots open.
The current strategy centers around Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani, which is the proposed main venue for the competition. The government has prioritized structural upgrades at the facility to ensure compliance with international standard track, seating, and media requirements.
Nyayo National Stadium has been earmarked as the official training venue for the visiting athletes. The government, under the leadership of President Ruto, has expanded public investment in transport networks and hospitality systems around these key hubs to support the bid.
The state has also increased resource allocation to the domestic anti-doping agency. This administrative adjustment addresses previous concerns regarding compliance with clean sport protocols and international regulatory frameworks.
Local sports officials are leveraging previous tournament experience to support their case. The city successfully staged the 2021 World Athletics Under-20 Championships at Kasarani, hosting delegations from 116 national associations under strict logistics protocols.
If successful, Kenya would become the first East African nation to host the senior championships. The inspection team will compile a report on the capital city's facilities before the international governing body makes its final hosting announcement.
