The South C Residents Association has demanded a comprehensive safety audit of all local construction projects after a five-storey residential building collapsed in the Nairobi neighborhood on Tuesday.

Residents of South C estate are demanding a full investigation into the structural integrity of ongoing and completed housing projects in the area. This follows the early morning collapse of a five-storey apartment block on October 22. While no fatalities were reported, the incident has caused significant alarm regarding the quality of workmanship and the level of regulatory oversight in the suburb.

The South C Residents Association issued a statement on Wednesday expressing deep concern over what they described as a failure by the National Construction Authority and the Nairobi City County government to enforce building codes. The association noted that many developers are allegedly ignoring approved plans and exceeding floor limits without intervention from inspectors.

Emergency teams arrived at the site shortly after the structure gave way, cordoning off the area to prevent further injury as the remaining debris stayed unstable. Preliminary reports from the scene suggest that the building was still under construction at the time of the failure. Neighbors reported hearing loud cracking sounds before the floors pancaked into the foundation.

In response to the incident, the association is seeking a moratorium on new construction permits in South C until a thorough audit of all sites is conducted. They are also calling for the immediate prosecution of the developer and the engineers responsible for the collapsed project. Local leaders have echoed these demands, stating that the safety of tenants must take precedence over the rapid expansion of housing units.

Nairobi has seen several building collapses in recent years, often attributed to poor quality materials and the circumvention of official planning channels. The South C Residents Association remains adamant that without a visible crackdown on rogue contractors, more lives will be put at risk by substandard developments.
