Chinese Navy Hospital Ship Departs On 200-Day Africa, South Asia Mission

The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy hospital ship Auspicious Ark departed from Qingdao, in China's Shandong Province, on July 22, 2026, launching a humanitarian medical mission expected to last more than 200 days across Africa and South Asia. The voyage marks the vessel's first deployment overseas.

Commissioned in 2025, Auspicious Ark is China's third domestically designed and built 10,000-tonne-class ocean-going hospital ship. It carries 18 clinical departments and five auxiliary diagnostic units, capable of performing more than 60 types of medical examinations, treatments and procedures.

The ship's onboard capabilities span general surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, and ophthalmology, supported by eight standard operating rooms that allow simultaneous surgeries. An onboard helicopter adds emergency medical rescue capacity during the mission.

More than 100 medical personnel are aboard, drawn primarily from the PLA Northern Theater Command Navy along with staff from the Naval Medical University and other units. Crew members prepared for the mission by reviewing medical literature and public health data specific to the regions the ship will visit, tailoring supply inventories to diseases most likely to be encountered.

Beyond treatment provided aboard the ship, medical personnel will also form mobile teams delivering outreach services directly to communities during port visits, extending care beyond those able to reach the vessel itself.

Named Mission Harmony-2026, the deployment is the 12th in a series the PLA Navy has run since 2010. The programme's first ten missions were carried out by the hospital ship Peace Ark, while the 11th, which ran from 2025 into April 2026, was conducted by the vessel Silk Road Ark.

China's Ministry of National Defense has described the mission as intended to strengthen cooperation with the countries visited, support the country's broader Global Security Initiative, and contribute to what officials call a maritime community with a shared future. Crew members are also expected to take part in cultural exchange activities during the voyage.
