Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori performed the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday for the construction of the Agbor/Uromi Junction Flyover in Ika South Local Government Area. The project involves a N59.7 billion investment aimed at addressing a high-traffic node on the Lagos-Asaba Expressway that has been the site of numerous vehicular accidents and persistent gridlock.
The contract for the design and construction of the infrastructure has been awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. Technical specifications for the project include a 1.3-kilometre bridge along the Uromi-Agbor Highway featuring dual carriageways with two lanes in each direction. The scope of work also covers the installation of ramps, roundabouts, concrete drainage systems, and solar-powered streetlights.
During the ceremony, Governor Oborevwori noted that the intersection serves as a vital economic link between the eastern and western regions of the country. The governor stated that the project was conceived to preserve lives and property while reducing the travel time for thousands of commuters who use the federal highway daily.
The state government has set a 14-month completion timeline for the bridge. This latest development follows the recent commencement of a N39.3 billion flyover project at Otovwodo Junction in Ughelli, bringing the total number of flyovers currently under execution by the present administration to five. Previous projects in the state's infrastructure plan include works at the PTI Junction, DSC Roundabout, and Enerhen Junction.
Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who attended the event, commented on the importance of maintaining policy continuity in the state's infrastructure sector. Officials from Julius Berger confirmed that preliminary works have already begun at the project site to ensure the 14-month schedule is met with minimal disruption to the existing traffic flow.
