Work is intensifying on the Kiambu Affordable Housing Project, a development specifically tailored to accommodate the massive workforce that commutes daily into Nairobi. Often called the bedroom of the capital, Kiambu Town is being positioned as a primary residential anchor under the national Affordable Housing Programme.
The project, which broke ground in October 2025, consists of 14 blocks. Upon completion, these structures will house 1,977 units. The units are categorized into studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments to meet various household needs and income levels.
According to details shared by Dr. Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, the project is divided into Social, Affordable, and Market-Rate segments. This tiered approach is intended to ensure that the housing remains accessible to different economic demographics within the region.
Beyond just residential space, the site is being developed as a self-sustaining community. The master plan includes 39 shops, a kindergarten, and a clubhouse. These facilities are designed to reduce the need for residents to travel for basic services, effectively creating a hub within the town.
Essential infrastructure on-site includes an underground water tank, a power house, and a dedicated garbage receptacle. These features are meant to ensure the long-term sustainability of the 14 blocks as the population density in the area increases.
The construction phase has already become an economic engine for the locality. Currently, the site sustains an average workforce of 200 people. This labor requirement provides direct income to local households while stimulating the nearby retail and supply chain sectors.
Local enterprises are reportedly seeing increased activity as the project sources materials and services. This injection of capital is expected to continue throughout the construction lifecycle, providing a steady flow of liquidity into the Kiambu County economy.
To ensure the project stays on track, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is overseeing multi-agency operations. These teams are tasked with securing construction zones and streamlining the administrative support required for such a large-scale undertaking.
Community engagement remains a priority for the government coordinators. By fostering a relationship with local residents, the administration aims to maintain a smooth implementation process while addressing any concerns from the surrounding neighborhood.
President Ruto has previously emphasized the importance of these projects in solving the housing deficit. The Kiambu site is a high-profile example of this strategy, focusing on areas with the highest demand for proximity to the city.
