President William Ruto has officially broken ground on the Nasewa Affordable Housing Project in Busia County. The development, valued at KSh5.5 billion, represents a significant expansion of the national government housing agenda within the border region.
The project consists of 2,000 residential units. These buildings are situated to complement the Nasewa County Aggregation and Industrial Park. The administration intends for the two sites to function as a combined economic hub, providing both accommodation and proximity to manufacturing jobs.
During the launch, the President highlighted the role of the construction sector in addressing unemployment. He noted that the Nasewa site will offer direct work for local youth, who are expected to provide the labor required for the massive structural phase now beginning.
Site activity has already moved into the early stages of civil works. Aerial views of the location show the initial excavation and foundation preparation across a wide expanse of red soil. Earthmoving equipment and staging areas for materials are visible as the contractor prepares for vertical construction.
The Nasewa project is part of a wider national program that seeks to deliver 200,000 affordable housing units annually. By placing these homes next to an industrial park, the government aims to reduce the logistical burden on workers while stimulating the local economy in Busia.
Engineers on site have started laying the first stone blocks, signaling the transition from planning to active masonry. The integration of the industrial park is a deliberate choice, as the aggregation center will handle agricultural produce from the surrounding county, creating a need for a nearby resident workforce.
Public interest in the development remains high, with large crowds attending the ground-breaking ceremony. The project will require a steady supply of local materials, including sand, ballast, and timber, which typically benefits local hardware suppliers and transporters during the multi-year construction timeline.
The Nasewa initiative follows similar launches across the country, where the state is utilizing public land to lower the cost of entry for homeowners. For Busia, this KSh5.5 billion investment marks one of the largest infrastructure spends in the county in recent years.
As work continues, the focus will shift to the completion of the internal infrastructure, including roads, water connections, and electricity. These utilities will serve both the 2,000 units and the industrial park, ensuring the site is fully operational as a self-sustaining urban center.
