The family of Sheila Jepkorir Chebii, a Kenyan national who died in Australia under unclear circumstances, is demanding answers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs (MFA) over events leading to her sudden demise.

Chebii was reportedly found dead at a hotel in Sydney last month. Australian authorities indicated that the incident was being treated as a suspected suicide, alleging that she fell from the 19th floor of the building.

The 25-year-old international student arrived in Australia on April 5, 2026, after completing a bachelor of accounting degree at Kabarak University. She was pursuing a master’s degree in accounting and auditing while working part-time at the Meriton Suites on Pitt Street in the Sydney Central Business District (CBD), where the incident occurred.

Her family has questioned the official account, alleging inconsistencies in how the initial police investigation was handled. Relatives stated that they were kept in the dark and denied access to Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from the premises for more than two weeks, prompting fears of a possible cover-up.

The victim's father, Samuel Chebii, has made public appeals for transparency regarding her final moments. He noted that if the incident was accidental, or otherwise, the investigators must provide a clear explanation and share the relevant surveillance logs with the family.

Local community members and Kenyan migrants in Australia have rallied behind the family, staging demonstrations outside the Sydney facility to demand justice. Activists leading the campaign expressed frustration over the silence of the local mainstream media and local authorities during the initial phase of the investigation.

The matter has since drawn political attention in Nairobi, where speakers have raised the case twice on the floor of parliament. Lawmakers have expressed deep concerns regarding the lack of clear communication from foreign authorities, urging the Kenyan government to push for a thorough, unbiased probe.

Reports indicate that Australian investigators are now looking beyond the initial self-harm theory. The ongoing inquiry is examining whether workplace safety breaches or other external factors played a role in the fatal fall.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs (MFA) has been urged to actively engage diplomatic channels to ensure the family receives full disclosure. The kin maintain that only an independent and fully transparent investigation will resolve the contradictions surrounding the tragedy.
