Two young men have died following a road accident involving a motorcycle and a saloon car along the Matuu-Mwingi road in Machakos County.
The incident occurred approximately one kilometre from Kithyoko town on Friday morning. According to witness reports, a speeding saloon car rammed into the motorcycle from behind as both were traveling along the busy stretch.
The motorcycle was reportedly carrying four people at the time of the collision. The rider died on the spot due to the impact, while a male passenger succumbed to his injuries while receiving emergency treatment at the Kithyoko Health Facility.
Two female passengers sustained multiple injuries during the crash. They were initially stabilized at the local health center before being transferred to Mwingi Hospital for specialized medical management.
Traffic officers from Nguutani Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after the crash to coordinate rescue efforts and clear the wreckage. The mangled remains of the motorcycle were moved to the station as part of the ongoing probe.
The driver of the saloon car was arrested by authorities following the accident. He is currently being held in police custody to assist with investigations into the circumstances of the collision.
Preliminary reports suggest the car was traveling at high speed before hitting the motorcycle. This section of the Matuu-Mwingi road has seen several incidents in recent months, often linked to speeding and mechanical failures.
In February, a similar incident occurred near the Mwatungo area of the same highway, involving a police vehicle that rolled after a mechanical malfunction. Local residents have previously called for increased patrols and better speed enforcement along the route.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the mortuary as families began the process of identification. Police have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when navigating the stretches approaching market centers like Kithyoko.
President Ruto has recently emphasized the need for stricter adherence to traffic laws across the country to reduce the rising number of fatalities on Kenyan roads. The Ministry of Transport continues to review safety protocols for public service vehicles and motorcycles.
Investigations into the Friday morning crash remain active, with a mechanical inspection of the involved car expected to be conducted.
