Dallas Stars Pick Lead Architect for Proposed North Texas Arena

The Dallas Stars have appointed infrastructure and architecture firm HNTB Corporation (HNTB) to design the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise's proposed venue in Plano, Texas.

The decision marks an initial phase in moving the team from its current location at the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas to a new venue roughly 20 miles north.

Plans for the facility center on an 18,000-seat arena situated west of the Dallas North Tollway, located on land previously occupied by The Shops at Willow Bend mall.

The stadium project will serve as the anchor for a wider mixed-use commercial district that incorporates mid-rise structures, an office tower, retail spaces, dining venues, and public gathering areas.

HNTB was chosen for its background in sports and entertainment infrastructure, having previously designed venue developments such as Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The project will involve master planning, architectural design, and urban integration to connect the sports facility directly with surrounding commercial real estate.

Dallas Stars owner Tom Gaglardi stated that the selection of the design team provides technical expertise needed to execute the organization's vision in Plano.

HNTB Chief Design Officer Ryan Gedney noted that the design strategy focuses on embedding the venue into an active, year-round district that functions beyond event days.

The overall mixed-use project holds an estimated development cost of $1 billion, according to local planning disclosures. The initiative reflects a broader trend across North American sports franchises shifting from isolated downtown venues toward integrated suburban entertainment districts.

Local voters in Plano are expected to consider tax measures later this year to support funding mechanisms for the proposed venue.

Design teams will continue refining structural blueprints and site planning as municipal approvals and financing frameworks progress.
