New Railway Terminal Construction Progresses Near Coast Highway

Construction works on the upcoming Changamwe East railway station have progressed, with site photographs showing structural framing and roof truss installations taking shape near the track corridor.

The facility is being built to serve residents within the industrial and residential zone of Changamwe, expanding access to commuter train transit.

The project forms part of broader efforts by the national rail operator, Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC), to integrate the local Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) network with the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus located at Miritini.

Site photos highlight a single-story station house structure with arched window openings and active scaffolding surrounding the building perimeter. A distinctive series of arched steel frames extends parallel to the rail line, forming a covered platform area designed for waiting commuters. Construction crews continue masonry and structural fitting operations on site.

The Changamwe East terminal is positioned along a vital transport corridor linking Miritini to the island core. Once fully completed and integrated into daily schedules, the stop will allow local commuters to board urban trains connecting toward the main station or outer suburban hubs.

The development addresses historical transport bottlenecks between mainland residential districts and urban commercial centers. For years, commuters rely heavily on road-based public transport, frequently encountering delays along major arteries connecting the mainland to the coastal port town.

Under the commuter rail program, KRC has upgraded track sections, built new stations, and added intermediate stops to maximize public utility along existing lines. The station in Changamwe East, alongside a sister facility at Changamwe West, is strategically located to capture traffic from densely populated neighborhoods.

The terminal structure features modern architectural elements, including reinforced concrete foundations, durable masonry walls, and wide pedestrian access corridors designed to handle heavy passenger traffic during morning and evening rush hours.

In addition to serving local transit needs, intermediate stations like Changamwe East provide feeder connectivity for long-distance rail passengers moving between coastal communities and the SGR network. Passengers arriving on local commuter runs can transfer efficiently without depending entirely on road transport options.

Work on the facility proceeds alongside ongoing operational planning by rail authorities, who intend to increase daily commuter services across coastal transit corridors. Final fittings, roofing cladding, utility connections, and platform paving remain underway ahead of full operational deployment.
