KETRACO prepares to energise 132kV Nanyuki-Rumuruti transmission line

Engineers are finalizing testing protocols to safely commission the new high-voltage grid infrastructure connecting Nanyuki and Rumuruti.

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) is preparing to energise the newly completed 132-kilovolt (kV) Nanyuki-Rumuruti transmission line. The project falls under the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, which oversees state power utilities.

Transmission engineers are executing rigorous final safety protocols. These procedures are required to introduce high-voltage power to newly built electrical lines and associated substations before full grid integration.

Engineers carry out comprehensive system protection checks across the circuit. Eng. Edna Ongwenyi, a system protection engineer at KETRACO, noted that these systematic steps ensure protective relays and switching gear function properly under energized conditions.

Energising high-voltage infrastructure involves detailed pre-commissioning tests to verify insulation integrity and phase alignment. Once all protection systems are validated, the line will be connected to the national power grid to support regional distribution.

High-voltage transmission projects require careful coordination between field engineers and central grid control centers. Such measures prevent equipment damage during initial power injection and protect technical personnel working on site.

The completion of civil works and tower erection allows state power agencies to focus entirely on electrical testing. The Nanyuki-Rumuruti circuit expands high-voltage wheeling capacity across regional supply corridors in central Kenya.

Power utilities routinely conduct controlled energisation exercises to protect network stability. KETRACO continues to monitor system responses during initial charging to ensure all components comply with national technical standard requirements.

Field teams remain deployed at major switching yards along the corridor. Operational handovers occur only after engineering teams clear all safety checkpoints and sign off on field testing data.
