Construction of the Mwichiune Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) market in South Imenti, Meru County, has been completed and the facility is now ready for commissioning. The new modern market is designed to support regional agricultural commerce, as well as local enterprise activities across the county.
According to details shared by Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo, the development incorporates 127 organized trading stalls. The infrastructure also includes an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hub, a social hall, and a fully equipped kitchen intended to serve traders and the surrounding community.
The physical facilities aim to provide local vendors with a secure, organized, and properly equipped commercial space, while fostering broader public engagement within the region. The completion of the build follows joint public sector efforts, with the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration (SDISNA) coordinating local project execution on the ground.
SDISNA played an active operational role in supervising the implementation timeline, ensuring that construction milestones were met to allow for timely project delivery. The completion aligns with national efforts to roll out improved markets and trade facilities across rural and semi-urban centers.
The new structure stands as a multi-story modern facility with clear dedicated zones for commercial stalls and administrative functions. Ground layout and surrounding drainage works have been established around the perimeter of the primary building complex.
With physical construction now wrapped up, the market awaits official commissioning before vendors move in to occupy the stall allocations. Local trade authorities and administrative teams are finalizing operational procedures to manage the transition of small-scale traders into the venue.
The completion of the Mwichiune site reflects broader infrastructure spending targeted at decentralized trade centers, which seek to connect agricultural producers directly to organized retail outlets. Local traders are expected to take up space in the facility following the formal opening ceremony scheduled by government officials.
