Government advances market infrastructure development as national inspection tour highlights ongoing construction works in Machakos.

President William Ruto has conducted an on-site inspection of the ongoing construction works at the Kimutwa modern market, located in Machakos County. The project forms part of the national government initiatives aimed at upgrading trading infrastructure across various counties.

The developments are intended to provide covered, structured, and hygienic spaces for local traders and small-scale vendors who currently operate in open-air conditions.

During the visit, President Ruto assessed the structural framework of the facility, which remains under active construction. The site displays concrete walling, supporting pillars, and wooden scaffolding, signaling ongoing masonry work on the lower levels of the multi-storey structure.

The modern market facility is designed to accommodate fresh produce sellers, retail businesses, and agricultural goods distributors within the region.

The project is executed under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) market initiative, which seeks to build modern market facilities across all constituencies in Kenya. Under this scheme, the national government collaborates with local authorities to improve trading environments, boost rural commerce, and create structured economic nodes outside major urban centers.

Local commercial activities in the area currently rely heavily on informal setups that face challenges during adverse weather conditions. The construction of the Kimutwa modern market will address these operational hurdles by providing dedicated stalls, storage facilities, and improved sanitation infrastructure for traders.

Government officials accompanying the head of state noted that construction activities are proceeding according to the planned engineering schedules. The facility will incorporate designated loading zones, reliable water supply connections, and electrical fittings upon final completion of the structural and finishing works.

Similar market upgrading projects are currently underway in several other regions, as part of the broader national agenda to enhance public trading hubs. Once fully constructed, the Kimutwa modern market will serve thousands of farmers and traders across Machakos County.

The national government maintains that the completion of these specialized trade facilities remains a priority in supporting small and medium enterprise development nationwide.
