State Department for Roads reports ongoing bitumen upgrades and new dual carriageway works on the coastal corridor, separate from the larger flagship dualling project.

The State Department for Roads reports that upgrade of the Mombasa–Kilifi highway network is progressing steadily. The works combine road improvements to bitumen standards with construction of a new dual carriageway section.

This network upgrade covers 32.67 kilometres to bitumen standards. It also includes a new 7.66-kilometre dual carriageway. These components support better connectivity between Mombasa and Kilifi counties but form a distinct package from the main Mombasa-Kilifi dualling initiative.

The coastal corridor serves as an important link for passenger and freight movement. Improvements here aid access to tourism sites, residential areas and commercial centres along the route.

Dual carriageway sections separate opposing traffic flows. This setup reduces congestion and improves safety on busy stretches.

Bitumen standard upgrades deliver a more durable surface. They lower long-term maintenance needs and provide smoother travel compared with earlier conditions.

The main Mombasa–Mtwapa–Kilifi dualling project, meanwhile, involves larger-scale works. It features full dualling on key lots including sections from Nyali toward Mtwapa and onward to Kilifi, with major bridge and interchange components.

The network upgrade forms part of the department’s broader programme. It contributes to efforts aimed at strengthening transport links in coastal regions.

Construction activities continue across the project zones. Recent updates show teams engaged in surface works and carriageway development.

The overall initiative supports national goals for reliable infrastructure. Enhanced roads in this area help cut travel times and operating costs for users.

Further sections will advance as current phases move forward. The project adds to ongoing investments in Kenya’s coastal transport network.
