President William Ruto initiates construction of a vital 13-kilometre road link and a new modern market in Busia, targeting improved trade connectivity between Funyula and Budalang'i constituencies.

Construction activity in Western Kenya has received a significant boost following the official groundbreaking of two major infrastructure projects in Busia County. President William Ruto launched the works during a regional visit, emphasizing a shift toward deliberate investment in long-term civil works to rectify historical development gaps.

The centerpiece of the visit was the commencement of the 13-kilometre Nangina-Sio Port-Okados-Mundere road. Valued at KSh860 million, the project is designed to provide a reliable bitumen-standard link between Funyula and Budalang’i constituencies. Local logistical chains expect the upgrade to reduce transit times and vehicle maintenance costs, which have previously been hampered by seasonal weather patterns affecting unpaved sections.

Engineers on-site indicated that the road will serve as a primary artery for trade, connecting inland agricultural zones to the Sio Port region on the shores of Lake Victoria. This connectivity is anticipated to streamline the movement of goods and services, integrating previously isolated economic pockets into the national grid.

Beyond the transport sector, the President also laid the foundation stone for the Budalang’i Modern Market. This KSh130 million facility is part of a wider national program to transition informal traders into structured, purpose-built environments. The design of the market focuses on providing a dignified space for small-scale entrepreneurs, with specific emphasis on accommodating women and youth traders.

Contractors for the market project are expected to deliver a well-equipped facility featuring modern stalls and sanitary amenities. By providing a safe and organized trading hub, the government aims to catalyze micro-economic activity within Budalang’i, ensuring that the local community benefits directly from the surrounding infrastructure improvements.

The combined investment of KSh990 million represents a targeted effort to unlock the economic potential of the border county. During the ceremony, the President noted that these projects are part of a broader strategy to ensure no region is overlooked in the national development agenda.

Technical teams from the relevant ministries will oversee the implementation of these works to ensure adherence to budgetary and chronological targets. For the residents of Busia, the completion of the Nangina-Mundere road and the new market facility will mark a transition toward more robust regional commerce and improved accessibility.

The road project, in particular, has been a long-standing request from local leadership, who argue that the lack of paved surfaces has historically stunted the growth of Sio Port as a commercial center. With the heavy machinery now moved to the site, the construction phase is officially underway.
