President William Ruto has conducted an inspection tour of the ongoing upgrading works at the Nzoia Sugar Company (NSC) processing facility located in Bungoma County.
During the visit, President Ruto expressed satisfaction with the progress made in modernizing the milling infrastructure. He commended the industrial facility's leadership for their strategic proposal to construct a water storage dam at the Nucleus Estate, which aims to minimize reliance on rain-fed agricultural practices.
The rehabilitation of state-owned sugar processors remains a central component of government policy, intended to restore financial viability across the western sugar belt. Heavy capital investments are currently being directed toward plant maintenance, equipment replacement, and agricultural field development across the sector.
In addition to processing improvements, management teams are establishing irrigation mechanisms to guarantee raw sugarcane supply throughout the year. The proposed dam project at the estate will support irrigation activities and stabilize farm production, even during seasonal dry spells.
Factory infrastructure improvements include replacing aging components within the crushing units, updating steam boilers, and refining output storage systems. Engineers are currently working to eliminate operational bottlenecks, which previously caused frequent factory breakdowns and extended processing delays.
Local farmers and agricultural stakeholders have welcomed the modernization effort, noting that stable milling operations ensure timely harvesting of matured crops. Continuous factory operations will allow prompt payment processing for growers supplying cane to the plant.
The regional administration continues to coordinate with corporate leadership to secure land access and environmental clearances required for the upcoming dam construction phase. Modernizing both the agricultural and industrial arms of the enterprise forms part of a broader strategy to boost domestic sugar production capacities.
Government officials affirm that the ongoing facility assessments and infrastructure monitoring will continue until full operational efficiency is restored. Further project timelines and structural details regarding the planned Nucleus Estate dam will be announced by the company board as planning progresses.
