The redevelopment of Sio Port Pier in Busia County is progressing, turning a previously underutilised stretch of the Lake Victoria shoreline into a strategic link for trade and transport.
A pier is a raised structure, typically supported by piles or columns, that extends from the shore into the water to provide berthing for vessels. Works include construction of a modern pier to support safer movement of cargo and passengers.
The waterfront is also being reinforced to protect the port area from erosion. Clearance of invasive aquatic vegetation is underway to improve navigability and vessel access.
Supporting facilities under development include a modern jetty, a structure that extends into the water to facilitate loading and unloading of vessels. Cargo handling and storage spaces are also being established.
A passenger waiting area and offices for agencies involved in trade facilitation and border management are part of the project. These additions are designed to streamline operations and improve service delivery.
The Kenya Ports Authority is implementing the project. Construction is being carried out by Kenya Shipyards Limited as part of efforts to enhance inland water transport within the Lake Victoria Basin.
Technical crews are focusing on structural reinforcement of the pier foundation and waterfront. This involves placement of steel reinforcement, formwork and high-strength concrete to ensure durability against wave action and erosion.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting the initiative through strengthened border surveillance and maritime security coordination. Multi-agency operations are in place to ensure the port remains secure and efficient.
The project is expected to boost cross-border commerce between Kenya and neighbouring countries. Improved infrastructure at Sio Port is anticipated to attract more investment and support local livelihoods.
