The State Department for Livestock Development has commenced construction of a regional training institute and a 500-head capacity feedlot in Kanyonyoo to modernize livestock production and market access.

The State Department for Livestock Development is currently undertaking the construction of the Kitui Livestock Training Institute and a modern model feedlot in the Kanyonyoo area of Kitui Rural. The dual project is situated within Kitui County and represents a specialized infrastructure investment aimed at addressing technical gaps in the local livestock sector.

Once the works are finalized, the facility will serve as the first dedicated livestock training centre in the region. The structural program for the institute focuses on providing a central hub where farmers, extension officers, and other industry professionals can access practical knowledge and technical skills. This educational infrastructure is intended to support the modernization of production systems as the sector prepares for increased activity in domestic and international markets.

The adjacent model feedlot is being built with a specific operational capacity for approximately 500 cattle. This component of the site will function as a centralized facility for controlled animal fattening. By concentrating livestock in a managed environment, the facility aims to improve the consistency and quality of animals before they reach the market.

The site selection in Kanyonyoo places the project within a strategic corridor for livestock movement. Beyond the physical buildings, the project framework includes establishing links between local producers and structured markets. This system is designed to facilitate value addition and provide farmers with access to reliable offtakers, creating a more formal value chain for the region's livestock economy.
