Construction of the Athiru Gaiti ESP market in Meru enters its final stretch, promising specialized cold storage and modern stalls to support local traders in Igembe South.

Work on the Athiru Gaiti market in Igembe South has moved into the final stages of completion. The facility is being developed under the national Economic Stimulus Programme, or ESP, with the aim of providing modern facilities for small-scale traders in Meru County.

The two-storey structure is designed to change how local commerce is conducted by moving traders from informal settings into a secure environment. According to Interior PS Dr. Raymond Omollo, the project centers on equity and inclusion for those currently lacking dignified trading spaces.

On-site progress shows that the main building frame and its roofing are largely in place. The design focuses on organized stalls that allow for a high density of vendors without the congestion common in older regional markets.

A critical technical feature of the project is the installation of cold storage units. These systems are intended to preserve perishable produce, which helps farmers and traders reduce post-harvest losses that often impact earnings in the agriculture-heavy region.

Beyond the stalls, the facility includes essential amenities such as modern sanitation blocks and an integrated ablution area. These additions are part of a broader government push to ensure public markets meet basic health and hygiene standards.

The market has been integrated with ongoing local electricity connectivity projects. This ensures that the cold storage and lighting systems remain functional, positioning the site as a reliable hub for the Igembe South community.

During the construction phase, the project provided jobs for local youth. Government officials expect the economic impact to widen once the facility is fully operational and the temporary construction roles transition into permanent trading and maintenance opportunities.

The implementation involves a cross-departmental collaboration. The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is working with the State Department for Housing and Urban Development to oversee the final delivery of the site.

This coordination is intended to ensure that the project meets specific timelines and that local engagement remains a priority. The market serves as a practical application of President Ruto's administration policy to decentralize economic infrastructure.

The Athiru Gaiti facility is one of several fresh produce markets currently being rolled out across the country. By providing structured environments, the government aims to formalize the small-scale trade sector and improve revenue collection for county governments.

With the scaffolding coming down and final finishing works underway, the focus now shifts to the allocation of stalls. Local administrators are expected to manage the transition of traders into the new space once the final inspections are cleared.
