The Kenyan cabinet has approved funding for two key road projects that will speed up the completion of the Isiolo–Mandera Highway. The decision covers the 67km Modogashe–Samatar road and the 76km Rhamu–Mandera road.

The Isiolo–Mandera Highway is a strategic infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity in Northern Kenya. Once completed, it will enhance trade, movement of goods and access to essential services in the region.

The Modogashe–Samatar and Rhamu–Mandera sections are critical links in the overall corridor. Funding approval will enable contractors to accelerate works on these stretches.

Northern Kenya has historically faced challenges with poor road infrastructure. The highway project is expected to open up economic opportunities, support security operations and facilitate better delivery of government services.

President William Ruto has prioritised infrastructure development in arid and semi-arid regions. The latest approval is part of ongoing efforts to address historical infrastructure deficits in the north.

The roads will improve access to markets for livestock and agricultural produce. They will also reduce travel times and vehicle operating costs for residents and transporters.

The Isiolo–Mandera Highway forms part of larger regional connectivity initiatives. It is expected to strengthen integration between northern counties and the rest of the country.

Construction on various sections of the highway is already underway. The new funding will help maintain momentum and ensure timely completion of the remaining segments.

The projects are anticipated to create employment opportunities for local communities during construction and maintenance phases.
