Engineering Report: Mwache Main Dam Now Over 87% Complete in Kwale

The Ministry of Water has reported that construction of the Mwache Main Dam has advanced past the 87% mark, bringing closer a reliable water supply for Mombasa and Kwale counties.

The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation delivered an update on one of the coast's flagship water projects. Construction on the Mwache Main Dam in Kwale County now stands at over 87% complete.

Principal Secretary Julius Korir joined teams from the Kenya Water Security and Climate Resilience Project to highlight steady progress on site. Key dam structures continue to take shape as crews push toward full operational status.

Cabinet Secretary Eng. Eric Mugaa echoed the same figures in his own briefing on the project. The update signals that the multipurpose facility is entering its advanced stages after years of work along the Mwache River.

Once finished the dam will store substantial volumes of water and channel reliable supply to households, farms, industries and livestock across Mombasa and Kwale. Officials described the milestone as important for long-term water security in a region long plagued by shortages.

The project relies heavily on roller compacted concrete (RCC) for the main gravity dam wall, marking a notable application of this efficient construction method in Kenya. RCC allows faster layering and compaction using heavy rollers, which helps control costs while delivering the necessary strength for the 84-metre-high structure.

Site teams have maintained consistent pace on the concrete placement and associated works including the spillway and intake systems. This approach has supported steady advancement even as the project navigates the final push toward impoundment.

The dam forms part of broader efforts to strengthen coastal infrastructure against climate variability and growing demand. When operational it is projected to supply around 186,000 cubic metres of water daily, easing pressure on existing sources and reducing reliance on water trucking.

Associated amenities have also advanced with some already completed.

Local communities stand to benefit through improved domestic access, expanded irrigation potential and support for economic activities that depend on stable water supply. The initiative also includes components aimed at enhancing overall climate resilience in the counties.
