The Kenya Ports Authority officially launched the Vessel Traffic Management and Information System at the Port of Mombasa on Wednesday.

The new system aims to improve vessel traffic control and overall port operations. It forms part of KPA’s ongoing modernisation efforts that leverage technology for safer and more efficient maritime activities.

KPA Chief Executive Officer Capt. William K. Ruto presided over the launch. He emphasised the authority’s focus on digital solutions to strengthen Mombasa’s position as a regional maritime hub.

The VTMIS operates from three interconnected locations. These include the Port Vessel Traffic Services Control Tower, Ras Serani Signal Station and Shimanzi Oil Terminal Radar Site.

Together they create a unified platform offering real-time monitoring of vessel movements in the port and surrounding waters.

Key features encompass advanced radar surveillance, automatic vessel identification, marine communications, weather monitoring, oil spill detection and digital management tools.

These capabilities are expected to enhance situational awareness and support faster decision-making during port operations.

The project also included training for KPA staff in vessel traffic services, radar operations and related international standards including IALA certification.

Capt. Ruto reaffirmed the authority’s dedication to infrastructure investment and sustainable practices. The system aligns with goals for regional integration and global competitiveness.

Mombasa serves as the primary gateway for East and Central Africa. Upgrades like VTMIS help maintain its efficiency amid growing cargo volumes.
