State Department for Roads has highlighted ongoing earthworks and structural progress on the major Northern Corridor highway upgrade.

The State Department for Roads reports that expansion of the Rironi–Mai Mahiu–Naivasha–Nakuru–Mau Summit Road into a 4-to-6-lane dual carriageway is advancing on high gear. The update confirms that works are proceeding across key segments of the alignment.

Heavy machinery is currently reshaping sections of the corridor. Excavators and dump trucks are moving large volumes of soil as crews are widening the existing route. The single carriageway road is staying open for traffic beside the new development.

Teams are handling steel reinforcement and formwork at multiple bridge and culvert sites. Safety netting and barriers are protecting active zones while operations are continuing. Coordinated crews are pushing forward with earthmoving and structural tasks in the Rift Valley terrain.

China Road and Bridge Corporation in partnership with the National Social Security Fund is handling sections of the project. Shandong Hi-Speed Road and Bridge International is undertaking other parts. This division allows simultaneous progress on different stretches.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki conducted an inspection of the works. He visited sections including Manguo, Kirenga, Kijabe, Kinungi, Naivasha and Gilgil to assess the pace of activities on the ground.

This corridor serves as a vital link in Kenya’s Northern Corridor. It connects Nairobi through Naivasha and Nakuru before climbing to Mau Summit.

The project is upgrading roughly 175 kilometres of the A8 highway. Contractors are focusing on lane additions and drainage improvements to tackle congestion and safety concerns on the hilly sections.

Dual carriageway designs separate opposing traffic flows. This configuration handles the heavy truck traffic and passenger vehicles that use the route daily.

Officials note steady advancement in widening and supporting structures. The works reflect a clear transition from planning to on-site execution on priority stretches.

Construction proceeds in phases to maintain flow on the existing road. Teams manage material supplies and crew activities amid the live environment.

The upgrade forms part of broader Northern Corridor enhancements. It aims to ease movement and support trade between the capital and western Kenya.

The Northern Corridor functions as a key artery for goods from Mombasa port to landlocked neighbours. Progress on this section helps reduce persistent b ottlenecks.
