President Ruto announced rehabilitation of the Bura and Hola irrigation schemes in Tana River County, positioning them as central to Kenya's food security strategy.

President William Ruto’s commitment to revive the Bura and Hola irrigation schemes represents a monumental step toward achieving food security in Kenya. The flagship project is the rehabilitation and expansion of the Bura Irrigation and Settlement Scheme. This overhaul is centered on transitioning the scheme from a costly, diesel-powered pump system to a sustainable, gravity-fed water conveyance method. This critical shift, involving the construction of a new gravity canal, is set to drastically cut operating costs, making farming significantly more viable and profitable for settlers.

Once completed, the project is expected to expand the area under irrigation from 12,000 acres to an impressive 25,000 acres. This increased capacity is forecast to yield a massive boost in crop production, specifically an additional 950,000 bags of rice and 500,000 bags of maize annually, directly strengthening Kenya's staple food reserves.

The government projects that this extensive rehabilitation will generate immense socioeconomic opportunities. The expansion is anticipated to create more than 120,000 new jobs, providing much-needed employment for the local population and stimulating economic activity. The financial impact is estimated to inject a staggering five billion shillings into the regional economy each year.

Furthermore, the strategy includes value-addition components, such as the Integrated Fruit Processing Plant, which supports farmers by reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring better market prices for their produce.

The Hola Irrigation Scheme is also a key beneficiary of this renewed government focus, receiving dedicated resources for its own revitalization. The holistic approach addresses long-standing issues of water unreliability and scheme underutilization that have plagued both projects. By ensuring consistent water delivery and promoting efficiency, the rehabilitation aims to stabilize livelihoods for thousands of farming families in the region.

This strategic investment in modernizing agricultural infrastructure is not just a regional development project; it is a vital national security measure, insulating Kenya's food supply from the unpredictable nature of rain-fed agriculture and the increasing threats of climate change. The successful rehabilitation of Bura and Hola schemes is positioned as a cornerstone of the government’s economic transformation agenda, promising a future of sustainable productivity and prosperity.
