Stakeholders have given the green light for construction of the Kithoka Airstrip, a Meru State Lodge and an associated golf course within Imenti Forest.

The Kenya Forest Service announced the outcome following a public participation forum held on 8 July for the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment study.

KFS officials said the project would strengthen forest conservation efforts. Aerial surveillance and faster emergency response to fires are among expected benefits.

Technical experts told the meeting that the chosen site avoided sensitive zones including elephant migration corridors. Detailed assessments guided the selection process.

Inputs from the forum and online submissions will inform the final decision on project approval.

The gathering took place against the backdrop of a High Court order that had suspended a separate public participation exercise.

Some environmental groups have expressed reservations about potential effects on the forest which serves as a vital water catchment area.

President William Ruto previously stated that the development would cause only minimal environmental impact.

Imenti Forest remains an important ecological resource in the Meru region. Proponents argue that the infrastructure could bring economic opportunities while supporting conservation through better monitoring.

The Kithoka Airstrip proposal forms part of broader plans for the area that include the state lodge facility.

Views remain divided on the balance between development needs and forest protection. Court cases challenging aspects of the project are still active.
