Treasury to Begin Feasibility Study for 243km Mau Summit-Malaba Toll Highway

The Treasury will begin the main feasibility study for the proposed 243-kilometre Mau Summit–Malaba toll highway in the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year. The project aims to upgrade the road into a four-lane expressway.

The upgrade is intended to ease traffic along one of Kenya’s key transport corridors. The route connects the Rift Valley to the border with Uganda at Malaba.

The highway forms part of the Northern Corridor, a vital trade route linking Kenya to Uganda and other East African countries. Improved capacity is expected to reduce travel times and boost regional trade.

The feasibility study will assess technical, financial and environmental aspects of the project. It will determine the best approach for construction and tolling arrangements.

The Mau Summit–Malaba section has long been identified as a priority for expansion. Current traffic volumes and the condition of parts of the road have raised the need for upgrades.

The project is expected to involve public-private partnership arrangements. Toll collection would help recover costs and fund maintenance over the long term.

Stakeholders have welcomed the move as a step toward modernising key highways. Some have urged the government to accelerate similar projects on other busy corridors.

The study comes at a time when Kenya is expanding its expressway network. Several toll roads have been completed or are under construction in different parts of the country.

The Mau Summit–Malaba expressway, once complete, is expected to improve connectivity between western Kenya and the border. It will support both commercial and passenger traffic.

The Treasury has not yet released details on the cost or timeline for construction. These will be determined after the feasibility study is completed.
