Multi-level facility in Juja to house 4,000 traders as construction enters final stages, featuring cold storage and digital commerce hubs to modernize informal trade along the busy economic corridor.

Construction of the Witeithie Modern Market Complex in Juja Sub-county is entering its final stages. Located along the Thika Superhighway, the project is designed to transition thousands of informal vendors into a more structured business environment.

According to updates from Dr. Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, the multi-level facility will accommodate over 4,000 small-scale traders. Most of these individuals currently operate in open-air conditions within Kiambu County.

The architectural layout includes organized stalls and specialized shops. To address logistical challenges for food vendors, the complex features cold storage facilities intended to reduce post-harvest losses for perishable produce.

Beyond traditional retail, the design incorporates integrated ICT and business hubs. These spaces are intended to support digital commerce, allowing local enterprises to tap into broader markets through technological infrastructure.

Sanitation and utility management have been prioritized in the build. The complex includes improved drainage, modern sanitation systems, and quality ablution blocks. A food court and a rooftop recreational space are also part of the structural plan.

Social amenities are a notable inclusion in the project scope. A crèche has been built on-site to assist trading parents, reflecting a shift toward inclusive urban design in regional market infrastructure.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has overseen the coordination of the project at the grassroots level. This involvement aims to ensure the facility remains secure and well-managed once it becomes fully operational.

Local employment has been a primary byproduct during the construction phase. Once finished, the market is expected to stimulate economic activity along the Thika Superhighway corridor by providing a dignified environment for enterprise.

Work on the site continues as contractors finalize the interior fittings and utility connections required for the grand opening.
